This hike is definitely one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. Its hiking trails are some of the most beautiful in Europe, and definitely one of the best things to do while spending time in Italy. The beauty about this coastline hike is that you are able to do it independently. You can also do it in one day. I recommend starting earlier, before the crowds and during the cooler part of the day. I started at 8:30 in Riomaggiore, moving through Manarola, Corneglia, Vernazza, and ending in Monterosso. It wasn’t the smartest option because the section between Vernazza and Monterosso is the hardest so it would of been better to start in Monterosso first. This section has 600+ stairs and very narrow goat trails for those who may want to skip this section.
The walk can be quite confusing, especially with a lack of signs but it is a very popular activity (especially during Summer), so there will always be another tourist to follow or to ask questions. The whole hike can take between 5.5 – 7.5 hours. This depends on how much time you want to spend in each town having a look around. At the end of it we caught the train back from Monterosso to Riomaggiore.
Cost: Need to purchase a Cinque Terra card (5-7 euro/day for trail and museum access, or 10 euro/day for trail, museum and unlimited train access.
Advice: Wear good walking shoes and lots of water. Research before you go if there are any closures to any of the trials because you may have to change the order/miss a few trails.
